<description>Thought this article from Toastmaster&#039;s International October 2008 magazine issue was a good one. It analyzes the communication styles of McCain versus Obama -- topical after last night&#039;s debate.

		<description>Example of a Toast

He was born in Belgium and immigrated to Canada with his parents when he was 14 years old. Due to family financial pressures, he left school in Grade 9 to work in the tobacco fields in Langton near Tillsonburg, Ontario. At age 18, he bought an old army truck and began hauling manure from dairy farms to the tobacco fields.

A philanthropist and self-made man whose extraordinary achievements in the world of business
were predicated on a few distinct principles. He believes in hard work, doing the most with
the least, being determined and consistent, being accountable, and above all, being decisive.

In 1959, he moved to the Hamilton area. He purchased Laidlaw Transport Ltd.,
building it into the company that would become the largest school bus operator and third
largest waste management company in North America.

During the 1970s, he owned the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.

In 1988, he sold Laidlaw Inc. to Canadian Pacific and in 1990 retired to Bermuda
where he still resides. In 1992 he was awarded an honorary degree from McMaster University.

Please rise and charge up your glasses for a toast

		<description>Toastmaster Role Outline

Before the meeting

1)	Match Speakers and Evaluators
a.	Confirm Evaluators attendance.
2)	Confirm Speakers Attendance
a.	Speech Title
b.	Which manual is the project from?
c.	Timing?
d.	Introduction information.
e.	Any special setup? i.e. move lectern.
f.	Inform Speakers about their Evaluators.
3)	Contact General Evaluator
a.	Introduction information.
4)	Contact General Evaluator and Chair about 1) and 2) information.

At the meeting
(Keep in the back of your mind the meeting’s theme and word of the day)

Confirm speech titles
Ask your speakers if they require any special intro or setup to their speech.
If they require movement of lectern or other material confirm with the sergeant at arms or corporal at arms to make the necessary movements.

Toast: Ideally the toast is relevant to the theme.

Example of a toast:
Violence or non violence? That is the question. It is very important to understand that circumstances play a big factor in the decision making of non violent or violent acts. i.e. your emotional state, is your family’s safety at jeopardy?, are you at risk? What are the consequences? A not so common factor is basically the answer to our Violence or Non Violence Question. Common sense, ironically, not common practice; is very likely to provide us with the right answer under any circumstances.

Please rise and charge up your glasses for a toast

To ‘Common Sense’

<description>Today (Saturday) I was a judge at the Lakeshore Division Humourous and Table Topics contests. Our Area did well, placing John Walker first in the Humourous contest and Phyllis Inward second in the Table Topics contest. What a pity there was only two of us from First Oakville there to have the pleasure of enjoying two excellent contests.</description>
